Africa’s Last Eden
Safari to the Okavango Delta
June 6 - 13, 2027
“Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise…..”
“Africa is mystic; it is wild; it is a sweltering inferno; it is a photographer’s paradise…..”
This adventure ushers you into the “jewel of the Kalahari,” the Okavango Delta. It is one of the world’s last remaining untamed places where leopards and cheetahs and hippos, giraffes and lions, an astonishing variety of birds and vast herds of elephants gather at the confluence of African spring and summer waterways.
I can only bring a small group of guests because our safari camps are remote and our guides are known throughout Africa for their serious approach to wildlife. We will tread lightly, observe closely and quietly and have the kind of African adventure few travelers experience.
Each day will be filled with different ways to see the wonders of Africa’s wildest animals, the awe of a world that holds such beauty and grace and the knowledge that we are supporting conservation in Africa.
“If there were one more thing I could do it would be to go on safari once again.” Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) “Out of Africa.”
Day One: Sunday, June 6
Follow the sun, Sirens, eastward and southward to the City of Gold. We’ll gather at a Johannesburg hotel for a lively meetup on the eve of our adventure. We’ll get to know one another and prepare for the next morning’s flight into Botswana.
Lodging: Johannesburg hotel TBA.
Meals: Early evening hors d'oeuvres.
Day Two: Monday, June 7
Our incredible adventure begins! Let’s rise early and hop a flight from Johannesburg to Maun, Botswana where we’ll be met by our safari company as we board a small plane for the one hour trip to our first camp.
Situated at the edge of stream-fed savannas in the Delta, our simple but very comfortable quarters will be sheltered by knobthorn and leadwood trees and we’ll be serenaded by the sounds of water birds.
Wildlife may wander within yards of our tented rooms and at night, we’ll hear their roars and calls under a starry, midnight blue sky.
Our meals will be savory and nutritious and there is an oasis-like swimming pool with views of the floodplains, a bar and lounge and a library!
But the reason we are visiting this particular place with this safari company is the expertise of the guides and the company’s devotion to conservation. Please read on!
Day Three & Four: Tuesday, Wednesday, June 8 & 9
Rise before the sun each day and emerge into a tranquil African dawn. We’ll board small vehicles and set out for an unparalleled experience of observing wildlife in their natural habitats accompanied by some of the most knowledgeable and professional guides in Africa. They’ll share their insight on animal tracking and behavior and we will never be in a circle of other safari jeeps all watching the same beleaguered mama lion and her cubs.
Note: One travel journalist told me that she has brought her children and parents to this part of the Delta with these specific guides three times, “each time more exciting than the last.”
Breakfast awaits when we return to the camp and then we have relaxing afternoons that are perfect for reading, daydreaming, napping and some delightful book discussions.
When we’re refreshed, we’ll go back out for more exceptional wildlife watching as we learn about the nighttime movements of the animals.
Note: Did you know that the Okavango is the world’s largest inland Delta and it gives sustenance to more than 500 species of birds?
Lodging & Meals: All Inclusive.
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Day Five, Six & Seven: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, June 10, 11, 12
After our morning safari and leisurely breakfast, we’ll hop a small plane for a very short flight to another region of the Okavango Delta. This intimate safari camp is absolutely exceptional for predator sightings.
We are likely to see big cats like leopards and cheetahs hunting, large herds of antelope and zebra and extended families of African elephants.
Note: The experience is so vivid that our safari company puts this camp in this area of the Delta among the top five safaris in all of Africa. “Between us, we have visited dozens of times and never have we been disappointed.”
Our accommodations are comfortable (not luxurious) with open-air dining and tented rooms that feature private verandas for stunning expansive views of the Delta. A small swimming pool is perfect for an afternoon dip and the solitude is meant for relaxation and rest.
“I never knew of a morning in Africa when I woke up that I was not happy.”
Day Eight: Sunday, June 13
We’ll rise for one last pre-dawn safari, imprinting the indelible images of this adventure in our memories. After an energizing breakfast, it’s a drive to the Maun airport and then a flight back to Johannesburg and then on to the United States. (Most US-bound flights leave late in the evening, so our return travel will take place all in the same day.)
