Itinerary
Launch Day, Sep 15
Head north & then north some more, intrepid Sirens, until you arrive in the wild, watery borderlands between the North Star State and Canada. You are embarking on a four day voyage across some of the most pristine waters in the world.
Arrive mid-morning at Rainy Lake Houseboats in International Falls and greet your new mates. We’ll get a briefing on the boat and the trip and then cast off with our guide, Heidi, (one of the most impressive, adventure-loving women I know!) and your Chief Enthusiast, Kerri!
As you locate your bunks, we’ll break out the wine and yummies and begin our exploration of this spectacular national park.
Dinner will be served by candlelight and dessert will be taken on the upper deck as we talk about books under the stars. Oh, did I mention that we have a hot tub on board? Bikinis encouraged but not required.
Day Two, Sep 16
Rise and shine to a nutritious breakfast and plan to share a favorite poem as the sun warms the water around us. (Perhaps a poem that fits the wilderness experience of our adventure?)
Then, enjoy a lovely and leisurely morning of exploration, camaraderie and serenity as we drift into quiet bays and gaze on the splendid forests and wildlife for which Voyageurs is famous.
Heidi and Kerri will lead hikes each day, but you are welcome to stay aboard and read, fish or simply soak up the sun.
In the evening, cocktails, dinner and a delightful book discussion from the list.
Day Three, Sep 17
On this morning, we’ll do a book exchange over breakfast, as you make a gift of a favorite book to one of your boatmates. Afterwards, we’ll light out for new lakes and secret coves in Voyageurs as we take in the sheer scale of the wilderness. There are thirty lakes and hundreds of islands.
The day is yours to luxuriate in: hiking, steaming in the hot tub, napping, angling, reading.
Over lunch, we’ll discuss a suggested essay on reading. In the evening over cocktails, another conversation about a book from the list. Dinner and dessert to follow.
Day Four, Sep 18
We’ll start the morning with a bit of meditative reading on the upper deck. Bring a short paragraph or two from a writer who makes you see the natural world anew and share those readings with your fellow travelers.
Breakfast will also be on the upper deck and then we’ll pack up our gear and head, ever so reluctantly, to the dock. But the trip is not over!
We’ll gather at The Library Cafe (how perfect!) in International Falls at 10:30 am for coffee and pastry and one last book conversation.
